In the early 70s, the government recognized the need to intervene with companies on behalf of employee safety and OSHA was born. The ultimate goal was to protect the employee from workplace hazards and assure that employers had the management systems in place to provide employees with a safe work environment.
As time has passed, most corporations accept “safety” as a primary goal or top priority and maintain the processes needed to provide workers with adequate training, resources, and equipment to do a safe job. With this accomplished, an unwritten transition seems to have taken place; not only should we protect the employee from the employer, we must also strive to protect the employees from themselves!
What a unique challenge for safety professionals! Many, if not most, safety professionals have technical degrees. Yet many of these same professionals spend hours and hours focused on the behavioral (soft) side of safety, for which they may have had no formal training.
As time goes on, I believe we will see concepts like Human Performance Technology (HPT) and behavior-based safety programs become a key component of companies striving to improve safety performance. It’s easy to tell someone the “rules” about safety, but how can we get them to truly understand the “value” of the rules? Do we “check the box” after the training class or do we figure out some method to confirm that we have truly made the student understand the reason behind the rules.
The bottom line for me as I continue my journey in this safety role is the message I share with every group of employees I have a chance to meet: Please don’t be safe because OSHA tells you to or because your company tells you to. Be safe because you understand how valuable your life is to yourself and those around you. Think about the true value of your eyesight, hearing, fingers, and any other facet of life that can be taken away in a moment’s notice due to carelessness. OSHA gives you the right to protect yourself from your company, but who is protecting you from you?
